Camp Lakodia celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its purchase by the private, non-profit organization Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc. (CSD) at a noon event on Wednesday. Kevin Barber, vice president of emerging programs, described the renovation of the former 4-H camp over the past 10 years. CSD renovated all of the existing buildings, constructed new ones, and acquired adjacent land for possible future expansion. Benjamin Soukup, founder of CSD, was the keynote speaker. Madison Mayor Gene Hexom expressed his appreciation to CSD for its extensive work at Camp Lakodia, while recalling his own experiences as a youth at the camp. Madison Chamber Director Rose Jamison also spoke, and Patty Kuglitsch was emcee. The national recession and higher airfares have hampered some of the plans for hosting national deaf and hard-of-hearing camps for youth, but Camp Lakodia is still a vibrant place. Its name, essentially "a meeting place for friends," is central to its mission. Camp Lakodia is available to the public for retreats, weddings, youth summer programs and family gatherings. In total, the facility offers 450 meeting seats, 225 dining seats and 150 beds. For more information, contact Camp Lakodia at 877-525-6342 or www.camplakodia.com.
