Bulldogs add two wrestling wins; beat Vermillion, Tea
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 12/05/2012
The Madison Bulldog wrestlers continued their early-season success at Vermillion on Tuesday night by downing Vermillion and Tea Area in a triangular.

Madison beat Vermillion 54-24 in a Big 8 Conference match.

"What a great way to start off the night," said Madison coach Chris Waba. "Vermillion is the defending Big 8 Conference champion. We needed to be mentally prepared for them, and I thought we were ready to go."

Madison trailed 24-18 after the 145-pound match.

Matt Goth jumped-started the Bulldogs with a 4-3 win over Regan Bye at 152, but Madison stilled trailed 24-21.

Madison won the next six matches to pull out the win.

Michael McComish pinned Brandon Hertz in 4:24 at 160.

Tyler Heeren followed with a 4-3 decision at 170 over Alex Osborne.

Tyler Currey pinned Seth Heine in 3:09 in the 182-pound class.

Corey Welbon pinned Noah Westergaar in 2:18 in the 195-pound match.

Dexter Nowstrup and Ayson Jones each picked up forfeit wins.

"We really needed to rely on our upper weights in this match," Waba said. "From 152 on up, the kids really put it together for us."

Madison won five of the 14 junior varsity matches against Vermillion. Picking up wins for Madison were Jared Hodges (2), Tyler Guthmiller, Cole Leighton and Nate Guthmiller.

    Madison 63, Tea Area 18

It was all Madison against Tea Area as the Bulldogs rolled to a 63-18 non-conference win. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 18-0 lead after the first three matches and never looked back.

Getting pins for the Bulldogs were Derek Bierschbach, Bailey Mennis, McComish, Welbon and Jones.

"We were able to put together a nice string of wins," Waba said. "Tea has some quality wrestlers in the middle of their lineup, and it was nice to see us stay focused after the win over Vermillion."

According to Waba, the Bulldogs are getting better every day.

Trevor Hoadley and Brandon VanRosendale picked up exhibition wins for Madison.

Madison will go to Watertown on Saturday for the Watertown Dual Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. In Madison's pool are Watertown, Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
