Christmas angels still available
By Staff 12/07/2012
There's still a need for community members to select an angel from one of the Lake County Food Pantry's angel trees and from the grandma/grandpa tree.

As of Thursday, there were 16 angels still hanging on the trees at Madison Public Library, Gary's Bakery and Montgomery's Furniture. Angels on those trees are hung for children of struggling families in the community.

Food Pantry noard member Tammy Olson said this year's angels were hung for 254 children (two for each child).

Gifts for the Angel Tree program can be dropped off at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Gifts will be sorted on Dec. 14 and delivered on Dec. 15.

Food Pantry Board President Jeff Nelson said the Angel Tree program will benefit 254 children in 170 families this year. Along with the gifts, the program provides a food box with all the fixings for a holiday dinner.

Nelson said numbers are down slightly from 2011, but it still provides a very ambitious goal for the local Food Pantry.

A fourth tree with angel ornaments is set up this year at Shopko Hometown. These angels represent needs of local nursing home residents. As of Friday morning (today), 38 ornaments were still hanging on the tree. This tree is sponsored by one of the Leadership Madison committees. Gifts purchased for the grandma/grandpa tree should be returned to Shopko by 5 p.m. Dec. 19.
