Two hires OK'd for Sheriff's Office

Lake County Commissioners approved new hires for the Sheriff's Office and two contracts for prison housing on Thursday, when they met to conclude year-end business.
Sheriff Tim Walburg presented two new hires for his department. Allan Schroeder has been hired as corrections officer and Charlie Pulford Jr. has been hired to fill one of two deputy sheriff positions.
Walburg said interviews are still taking place to fill the second deputy position. Schroeder will start at the jail on Dec. 31 and Pulford will begin on Jan. 1. Walburg said Pulford previously worked for the Lake County Sheriff's Office as a corrections officer. Since that time, he attended Southeast Technical Institute and worked as a corrections officer in Sioux Falls.
Walburg said that Pulford will need to be certified, and the earliest class he can attend is next November.
Walburg also presented contracts for prisoner housing with Davison and Brookings counties. Davison County's contract reflected an increased rate to $86 per day, which is up $11. Brookings County's contract stayed the same at $65 per day.
Walburg said the Brookings and Davison county jails are both used to house women prisoners, along with the Minnehaha County Jail.
In addition to the higher rate at the Davison County Jail, Walburg said, if Lake County prisoners are in need of medical care, Lake County deputies must drive down and transport the prisoners to a local clinic.
The daily rate in Sioux Falls is about $74 per day, but Walburg said the jail there is almost at capacity most of the time.
County Commissioner Chris Giles said maybe it's time to look at expanding Lake County's jail so that women prisoners could be housed locally.
"It may pay for itself," Giles said, indicating that it might also provide another option for prisoner housing with the smaller counties in the area. "I'd like to see you explore options."
The Brookings County contract was approved as the primary contract for prisoner housing, with Davison County as an alternative. Walburg said he's currently determining whether there is a written agreement with Minnehaha County or if it's a standing agreement.
Commissioners approved a contract between the Sheriff's Office and the County Health Nurse which allows a basic physical for prisoners after they have been housed for 14 consecutive days. Walburg said this agreement was put in place last year and saved the county money in determining pre-existing medical issues.
