Semi-pickup accident occurs on divided SD-34
By CHUCK CLEMENT, Staff Reporter 01/03/2013
The Lake County Sheriff's Department responded to a semi-pickup collision that occurred on Wednesday afternoon just southeast of Madison on the divided portion of SD-34.

The Sheriff's Office received an emergency call at 2:21 p.m. notifying authorities of an accident at the intersection on SD-34 and 456th Ave.

Before the collision, Ray Hammer, 73, of Chester had proceeded north of 456th Ave. and stopped at the intersection before turning left. Hammer was driving alone in a 2002 Chevrolet S-10, had stopped in the highway median and attempted to turn west onto the inside lane.

As Hammer turned onto SD-34, his pickup collided with a semi that was traveling west on the inside lane of SD-34. Dustin Vostad, 32, of Toronto, S.D., turned a 2000 Peterbuilt onto SD-34 from SD-19, another intersection located about 1/2 mile east of the accident site. Vostad was also driving in the divided highway's inside lane.

The Chevrolet pickup was reported to have disabling damage and the semi received function damage from the accident.
