Seven Chester High School students are preparing for a national Quiz Bowl competition this spring after their team was selected as the small school representative at the Siouxper Bowl IX Quiz Bowl Tournament. Chester finished fifth in the point standings at the tournament in November at Sioux Falls. Due to that ranking, the team was awarded the tournament's small school entry in the National High School Competition on May 24-26 in Atlanta, Ga. Jennifer Nelson, the coach for the Chester team, described the students' achievement as "a huge accomplishment" because Quiz Bowl competition typically pits the Chester teenagers against teams from larger schools. "We're always competing against bigger schools like O'Gorman or Aberdeen, but we're able to hold our own," Nelson said. Other qualifying teams from the Sioux Falls event were from Brookings, O'Gorman and Sioux Falls Roosevelt high schools. The Chester Quiz Bowl team is made up of all the high school grade levels. Members are Adam Anderson, Jacob Campbell, Madison Swift, Kenneth Shaffner, John Nelson, Calli Baumberger and Evan Baumberger. John Nelson also placed 11th in individual point rankings during the Sioux Falls competition. Jennifer Nelson described the Chester team as "well-rounded" when its knowledge is tested in Quiz Bowl competitions. Nelson judged that their most difficult question category is math, but the Chester team performs well in the science, government, history and current events question categories. Some of the question subjects that editors at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments have selected as important include works of literature, Supreme Court cases, Asian rivers, sculptors and 20th- Century composers. At this time, the Chester team is raising money to pay for travel, food and lodging expenses related to the Atlanta trip. According to Nelson, Sioux Valley Energy has assisted with the group's fund-raising efforts by offering to pay the printing expenses for discount cards. The Chester students will sell the $20 list-price discount cards as one of their fund-raising projects.
