Tigers notch third straight win in overtime
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 01/21/2013
The Howard Tigers made it three in a row on Saturday as they defeated the Menno Wolves 45-43 in overtime at Menno.

    Menno held a 12-9 first-quarter lead.

"Offensively we struggled from the start," said Howard Coach David Carmon. "The Tigers turned up the defense a notch and held the Wolves scoreless in the second period."

Howard grabbed the lead at halftime 14-12.

Menno outscored Howard 16-14 in the third period to deadlock the score at 28-28 after three periods. Both teams scored 12 points in the final eight minutes; the score was knotted at 40-40 to force an overtime period.

Howard outscored the Wolves 5-3 in the extra period.

"The key for the Tiger's third straight win and third straight Corn Belt Conference win was senior guard Steve Larsen's three-point basket at the buzzer," said Carmon. Larsen's basket sent the game into the overtime period.

Larsen dropped in a game-high 17 points. Cal Wiese tossed in 11 points. Andrew Schwader added eight counters and 10 rebounds while Landon Laible had five assists.

Austin Herrboldt had 15 points for the Wolves.

Howard (5-7) will go to Parker on Tuesday night. This will be a doubleheader with the girls. The tipoff for the boys' game is set for 4 p.m.
