Roy Lindsay took out an election petition on Thursday afternoon to run for Madison's mayoral seat in the April 9 election.
So far, the City Finance Office has reported that four men have requested petitions to gather signatures to run for the open mayor's seat. Mayor Gene Hexom decided earlier this winter not to run for another three-year term.
Lindsay joins Myron Moen, Paul Michael Weist and Dale Davis as potential candidates in this spring's election.
Lindsay retired from an education career in which he had taught industrial arts in the Madison Central School District. He also owns the Subway restaurant in Madison.
Davis, the director of the Dakota State University bookstore, decided earlier this week to start gathering signatures for his petition.
Weist, a DSU student, took out a petition on Monday. He is the son of Madison School Board member Paul Weist.
Moen took out an election petition from the City Finance Office last week. Moen is credited with the creation of the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame and currently serves as its executive director.
Collecting petition signatures serves as the first step for any potential candidate to run on the April 9 ballot. Interested persons could start circulating petitions last Friday, and they have a Feb. 22 deadline to turn in their completed petition forms.
The city and Madison Central School District have agreed to hold a combined election this spring. Along with the mayor's election, the Madison School Board has three seats up for election this year.
The terms for school board members Tom Farrell, Ryan Hegg and Paul Weist end this spring. All of the school board seats have three-year terms.
The deadline for voter registration regarding the combined city-school district election is on March 25.
