Lady Bulldogs use big quarter to notch sixth win

The Madison Lady Bulldogs used a fourth quarter rally to down the Hamlin Chargers 40-32 in a non-conference clash on Tuesday night at the Madison Middle School Gym.
Heading into the fourth period the Lady Bulldogs trailed 24-23. Field goals by Roz VandenBosch and Emma Marsh to open the final quarter put the Lady Bulldogs on top 27-24 with just under seven minutes in the game.
Both teams traded a basket as the Lady Bulldogs still held a three-point advantage 29-26 with 5:29 left in the contest. Leading 31-28 the Lady Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 35-28 with 3:12 left in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs ended the game with a 5-4 run to secure the win in the last regular season home game.
"The girls really stepped it up in the fourth quarter and earned this victory," said Madison coach Adam Ericsson. "We had some huge rebounds and knocked down free throws in the final stretch." Madison made 9-of-15 free throws in the final eight minutes.
Madison had a fast start in the game and grabbed an early 9-3 lead when Michaela Duff drained a three-pointer. The Chargers closed the quarter with a 7-0 run and held a 10-9 lead after one period.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second period with Madison outscoring the Chargers 8-5 and held a 17-15 halftime advantage.
The teams still struggled on the offensive end of the court in the third period. Hamlin outscored Madison 9-6 and held a 24-23 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Madison made 10 of 47 field goals, 21 percent and 18 of 28 free throws, 64 percent. Hamlin made 11 of 41 field goals, 26 percent and hit 9-of-16 free throws, 56 percent.
The Lady Bulldogs held the edge on the boards 28-23.
Marinda Kern tossed in 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the winners. Danielle Roemen added eight points and Marsh chipped in with seven counters. Vanden Bosch pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists.
Alicia West scored 11 points to pace the Chargers. Miranda Arbach pulled down seven rebounds and dished out three assists.
"Danielle and Roz were amazing floor generals," Ericsson said. "They got people where they needed to be and communicated well on the court."
Madison (6-13) will close out the regular season on the road Thursday night. The Lady Bulldogs will go to Dell Rapids to face the Quarriers with a 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
"We've doubled our win total from last season and only see good things on the horizon," Ericsson said.
JVs win
The Madison junior varsity team picked up a 39-26 win over Hamlin on Tuesday night.
Brenna Johnson scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds to pace the winners
.
Mandy Engbrecht and Jordin Delzer each scored six points. Delzer, Erin Meyer, Taylor Bird and Sabrina Bloom each had five rebounds for Madison.
Freshmen chalk up win
The Madison freshmen team earned a 43-23 win over Hamlin. Engbrecht pumped in 14 points, had five rebounds and four steals to pace the winners.
Mari Clark added 11 counters and grabbed eight rebounds and Amanda Ricke tossed in seven points and snared seven rebounds.
