The business plaza south of Pro Build on S. Washington Ave. has a new tenant -- Yost Agency. David Yost opened his office in Madison this past November. His office is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and by appointment. A graduate of Miller High School, Yost started his agency in 1984. He and his team provide life insurance and guaranteed annuities. Madison is a satellite office for his company, which is headquartered in Huron. Yost also has agents with home-based offices in Yankton, Mitchell and Winner. Yost said he and his wife have always seen Madison with its nearby lakes as a great location for retirement. "Why wait until later," he said. Since opening the office, Yost said, he's been pleased with his decision. "So far, Madison is a very friendly community. I feel blessed and fortunate to take that leap and find it that way," he said. Yost said he grew up listening to his parents sit at the table in the kitchen and help others work through their personal issues. He's since transferred that experience to the approach he takes at his agency where he sits with a client and looks at the options available and tries to find the right fit. "I like working with people and finding the right fit," he said. Yost said many of his clients are middle-aged or older who are looking for a stable investment that annuities provide. "They've seen the ups and downs of the market," he said. "They don't want to and can't afford to take the risk." As he explains it, with a guaranteed annuities, a person's investment earns interest when interest rates go up, but it doesn't take a hit when interest rates fall. Yost said his motto is to do no harm financially to any client and ensure they are better off after any investment they make. "I try to educate and visit. I want people to be comfortable and understand it," he said. "It's a big, important decision, it should be taken with care." Yost said many people are focused on the market and think it's the only way to invest for retirement. They also question something that promises a guaranteed return.
