Goth places fourth, Currey 6th at State Wrestling Tournament
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 02/25/2013
Two Madison wrestlers placed at the 2013 State A Tournament held over the weekend at Watertown, and the Bulldogs placed 20th in the team standings.

"We were able to place two young men, and all five wrestlers picked up a win at the State tournament," said Madison Coach Chris Waba.

Senior Matt Goth and junior Tyler Currey were the only two Bulldogs who placed in the grueling two-day tournament.

Goth closed out his career with his best finish at a state tournament, placing fourth in the 152-pound division.

Goth opened the tournament with a 6-5 win over Pierre's Alec Williams. Brett Bye of Vermillion beat Goth 8-3 in the quarterfinal match. Needing a win to stay alive, Goth earned a 10-3 win over Cole Hemmah of Sturgis Brown.

Goth started Saturday just like he did on Friday with a technical fall, 17-2, over Peyton Ledbetter of Sioux Falls Washington. Goth earned a thrilling 5-2 decision win over Devon Crandall of Brookings to send him to the third- and fourth-place match.

Goth squared off against Bye, with Bye securing an injury default win over Goth. Goth finished the 2012-13 season with an impressive 36-9 record.

Currey placed sixth in the 182-pound class. He opened the tournament with two decision wins over Payson Dirk of Strugis Brown 9-3 and Dan Marlette of Sioux Falls Washington 3-2 to make it into the semifinals.

It was a totally different result for the Madison junior on Saturday. In the semifinal match, Currey faced Aero Amo of Rapid City Central. Amo earned a major decision over Currey 12-2 and went on to win the championship at 182.

Currey faced Tyler Kleinsasser of Huron next and Kleinsasser earned a 6-0 decision.

In the fifth- and sixth-place match, Currey faced Cole Carlson of Aberdeen Central and Carlson emerged with the 9-3 win. Currey finished the season with an outstanding 40-9 record.

Bulldogs Corey Welbon (195) finished with a 27-14 record, Blake Gusso (220) closed the season with a 32-16 record and Ayson Jones (285) finished with a 33-16 mark. All three recorded one win at the state tournament but did not place.

Madison placed 20th in the team standings with 28.50 points. Winning the team title was Pierre with 180 points. Rounding out the top 10 were Rapid City Central 159.50, Huron 145, Aberdeen Central 109.50, Spearfish/Lead Deadwood 107, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 105, Rapid City Stevens 97, Sturgis Brown 83, Watertown 75.50 and Dakota Valley 71.
