State ag officials to discuss next generation of livestock production
By CHUCK CLEMENT, Staff Reporter 02/26/2013
State officials are inviting agricultural producers from Lake County and the surrounding region to a forum in Madison on Wednesday evening to discuss future opportunities and challenges related to South Dakota livestock production.

The S.D. Department of Agriculture and SDSU Extension are hosting the forum at Madison Livestock Sales.

The Madison meeting and others across the state provide an opportunity to talk about the next generation of farmers and ranchers and the effect that agriculture has on South Dakota's communities, economics and infrastructure.

B. Lynn Gordon, an Extension cow/calf field specialist, noted that agriculture is South Dakota's No. 1 industry, providing a total economic impact of $21 billion during 2010 alone.

"Livestock is a major contributor to the agricultural economy with the total value of livestock alone being $3 billion," Gordon said.

Gordon said that South Dakota has access to the resources needed for livestock production, including land, water and feed resources, and has the entrepreneurs interested in raising and developing livestock. She added that those resources and relevant research from South Dakota State University will help ag producers meet the demands of domestic and international markets.

About a dozen forums are scheduled across the state, including March 5 at Mitchell Livestock, March 6 at Yankton Livestock, and March 7 at Sioux Falls Regional Livestock. The forums started in mid-January and will continue through March 21. All sessions will take place at 6:30 p.m.

The sessions are held at area livestock markets statewide to discuss the future of South Dakota's livestock production.

For more information, contact Sarah Caslin, SDDA Livestock Development Specialist at 605-773-3549 or e-mail her at sarah.caslin@state.sd.us. Gordon can also provide information at 605-782-3290 and online at lynn.gordon@sdstate.edu.
