Madison won the last four matches against Sioux Falls Lincoln and went on to down the Patriots 47-29 in the season-opening wrestling match for the Bulldogs on Thursday in Sioux Falls. Trailing 29-23 with four matches remaining, Tyler Currey jump-started the Bulldogs at 182 pounds with a pin over Ben Hanson in 5:33 to deadlock the team score at 29. Corey Welbon followed with a pin at 195 against Tavin Jankowski in 2:40 to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the night 35-29. Blake Gusso continued the Bulldogs' string of wins in the upper weight classes with a 1:58 pin over Kyle Landeen at 220. Ayson Jones finished off the night in grand style for the Bulldogs with a 1:38 pin over Mycah Cummings at 285, giving Madison a convincing 47-29 win over the Patriots. "This was a very good way to start the season for the Bulldogs," said Madison Coach Chris Waba. "We have been working very hard in the wrestling room, and I think it was evident that it is paying off." After a forfeit by the Bulldogs at 106, Bailey Mennis picked up a huge win for Madison at 113. He pinned Mikio Kuroiva in 1:13 to deadlock the score at 6. The Patriots had a forfeit win, a pin and a major decision win in the next three matches to grab a 22-6 lead. Bulldog Brendon Waldner stopped the Patriots' string of wins at 138. He earned a technical fall over Luke Jamison, 18-1, but the Bulldogs still trailed in the match 22-11. The Patriots earned just one decision win in the next three matches. Matt Goth picked up a forfeit win at 152 for the Bulldogs and Michael McComish recorded a pin at 160. McComish pinned Max Hooker in 1:46 and pulled the Bulldogs to within two points, 25-23. The Patriots picked up a major decision at 170 to grab a 29-23 lead before the Bulldogs reeled off four straight pins to win the match. "We felt all the kids put forth the type of effort we were looking forward to this early in the season," said Waba. "Obviously, we have things to build on, but for match one, we are excited about the direction of this team." According to Waba, with the open weights in the lineup right now, it is important for everybody to do their part. "We can't have many mistakes or else this dual would have had a different outcome," he said. Madison will be back in action at Canton in the IODAK Tournament, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
