Eight Tigers qualify for State Wrestling Tournament

The Howard Tigers will be sending eight wrestlers to the State B Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Aberdeen. The Tigers placed second in the Region 2B Tournament held at Salem on Saturday. Howard racked up 172 points and finished behind the Canton C-Hawks, who had 227 points. Following the Tigers were Beresford with 168, Tri-Valley 156.50, Garretson 134.50, Flandreau 126.50, McCook Central/Montrose 103, Elk Point-Jefferson 88, Parker 56, Marion/Freeman 24 and Alcester-Hudson 20. Howard had three wrestlers who were crowned champions in their respective weight divisions. Gaining championships were Bailey Neises, Luke Loudenburg and James Jungwirth. Neises was crowned champion in the 113-pound class. He opened the tournament with a pin against Dalton Bodewitz of Marion-Freeman in 21 seconds. He earned a major decision win 14-0 over Jacob Fitzgerald of Garretson. Neises completed the day unbeaten with a 4-2 win over Jared Lyle of Beresford. Loudenburg went unbeaten in the 120-pound division. He opened the tournament with a 59-second pin against Nic Watson of Marion-Freeman. Loudenburg picked up another pin against Garretson's Brady Schleuter in 2:46. In the championship match, Loundenburg earned a 9-5 win over Justin Haneke of Beresford. Jungwirth picked up three wins in the 170-pound class and won the championship. Jungwirth opened the tournament with a 1:22 pin against Eli Orr of Beresford and followed that up with another pin against Cole Globke of Marion-Freeman in 1:56. In the championship match, Jungwirth claimed a thrilling 8-6 overtime win against Kyle Scofield of Flandreau. Evan Donahue placed second in the 138-pound class. He had pins against Brandon Oyen of Tri-Valley in 2:17, Andy Leber of Parker in 1:09, and Derek Dilts of Canton in 57 seconds to reach the championship match. Tate Lacey of Flandreau earned a major decision 15-4 over Donahue in the championship match. Howard had two wrestlers who placed third: Cole Hodges at 126 and Kaleb Haas at 160. Placing fourth in the tournament were Adonis Ruml at 132 and Nick Pardy at 182 to qualify for the state meet. The State Wrestling Meet will be held the Barnett Center on the campus of Northern State University in Aberdeen on Friday and Saturday with action getting started at 10 a.m. both days.
