Tigers use big 4th quarter to notch first-round win

The Howard Tigers used a huge fourth quarter to derail the Colman-Egan Hawks 59-43 in the first round of the District 4B Tournament held on Tuesday night at Howard. The Tigers outscored Colman-Egan 21-4 in the final eight minutes to secure the opening-round win. Howard will move on to the semifinal game on Thursday against Oldham-Ramona-Rutland. The C-E Hawks jumped out to a 13-6 lead after one period. Howard outscored the C-E Hawks 18-11 in the second period and the score was deadlocked at 24-24 at intermission. Colman-Egan held a 39-38 lead entering the final eight minutes. The Tigers made 22 of 46 field goals, 47 percent, and made 14 of 24 free throws, 58 percent. Colman-Egan made 16 of 52 field goals, 30 percent, and made 9-of-18 free throws, 50 percent. Howard held a slight edge on the boards 27-23. Jenna Clark poured 20 points and snared seven rebounds to pace the Tigers. Kelsey Dawson and Taylor Noid each scored 13 points for the winners. Tori Nelsen scored 12 points to lead the C-E Hawks. Paityn Groos and Hailey Harms each had 10 points. Harms pulled down six rebounds while Groos snared five. Howard (6-15) will go to Ramona to face #1 seed Oldham-Ramona-Rutland in the semifinal round of District 4B on Thursday. The other semifinal game has Dell Rapids St. Mary going to Chester to face the Lady Flyers on Thursday. Both games begin at 6 p.m. Colman-Egan finished the 2012-13 season with a 5-16 overall record.
