CC Triathlon set for April 20
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor
The kickoff to summer is the Community Center's annual Triathlon, which will be held on April 20 starting at 9 a.m.|
The triathlon is considered a single sport comprised of three race legs: swimming, cycling and running. Participants swim 300 yards (six laps) in the Community Center pool, bike nine miles and run 2.25 miles.
Last year's overall division winners were Teresa Van Hyfte from Hartford finishing with a time of 52:07 and Jason Crisp of Carlton, Minn., who had a time of 41:55. Both are expected back this year.
"This is the 11th year for the triathlon," said race director Nick Lemke. "We have 91 contestants already signed up, and we should have about 120 when the triathlon begins."
The Community Center triathlon has grown from 20 participants the first year.
"The Community Center Triahhtlon is an excellent event for first-time triathletes, since we offer sprint distances for the swim, bike and run. At the same time, experienced triathletes use our triathlon as a warmup or kickoff to the triathlon season."
Lemke is hoping for good weather on April 20.
"It would be nice to have good weather leading up to the triathlon so the competitors can train for it," he said.
According to Lemke, there has been only one time -- in 2011 -- when things had to be changed due to an ice storm. The bicycle portion of the triathlon could not be held and the running took place on Dakota State University's track.
Many competitors find that the best part of the triathlon is the relationships they develop with other participants and the feeling of accomplishment when crossing the finish line.
"We already have between 30 and 40 Community Center members signed up for the triathlon," Lemke said.
The Community Center reminds everyone to use caution on April 20 as participants will be running or biking on 9th Street and US-81.
