The Madison White 13&14 VFW Baseball team placed third in the 2013 State VFW 13&14 Teener Baseball Tournament over the weekend at Vermillion.|
In the opening game of the tournament, Madison downed Tabor/Tyndall 4-1.
Mason Leighton pitched four innings and Jesse Kruetzfeldt pitched the last three innings. The two held Tabor/Tyndall to just one run.
In the bottom of the first inning, after giving up a walk, the next Tabor/Tyndall batter gapped a hit to right-center and the base runner tried to score but was thrown out at the plate.
"This obviously pumped Madison up and took the wind out of Tabor/Tyndall's sail," said Coach Brian Leighton.
Getting hits for Madison were Kreutzfeldt, Colt Hawkins and Marcus VandenBosch.
Dakota Valley 5, Madison 1
Madison dropped a heartbreaker to Dakota Valley 5-1 on Saturday.
VandenBosch pitched four innings and Riley Janke finished on the hill for the White.
"It was another very good baseball game between two very sound teams, but this game had the key hits in favor of Dakota Valley," Leighton said.
Madison had five hits in the game. Mason Leighton and Janke each had two hits and VandenBosch had one.
Madison 4, Parkston 0
Madison bounced back nicely in the third- and fourth-place game and downed Parkston 4-0 on Sunday.
Mason Leighton pitched the complete-game shutout.
Madison had some timely hits against Parkston. Getting hits for the winners were Eli Gerry, Bailey Mennis, Bryce Eimers, Janke and VandenBosch.
"Though we were all disappointed to not make it to the championship game, the coaches were and are very proud of these young men for a great season," Leighton said.
