Howard Tigers qualify girls' team for State Meet

The Region 2B Cross Country Meet at Howard on Wednesday saw three area teams competing for team and individual titles. Chester, Colman-Egan and Howard had runners competing in the meet.|
In the girls' varsity division, the Howard Tigers placed third in the team standings with a score of 30 points. Winning the team title was Hanson with a low score of 18. Following the Beavers were Dell Rapids St. Mary 21, Howard 30, Elkton-Lake Benton 48, Arlington 55, Chester 59, Colman-Egan 60, Canistota 64 and Lake Preston 78.
Howard had three runners who placed in the top 15 in the 4K race. Leading the way for the Tigers was Macy Erickson, who crossed the finish line in ninth place with a time of 16:53.61.
Following Macy Erickson across the finish line was Josie Erickson, who placed 10th in 16:54.21.
Hannah Noonan was the third Tiger to cross the finish line. Noonan placed 11th in the race with a time of 16:55.57.
The entire Tiger team will qualify for the upcoming State Cross Country Meet. Other runners participating at the State Meet for the Tigers will be Macey Claussen, 22nd (17:28.24); and Ellen Lewis, 23rd (17:33.03).
Two girls from Chester qualified for the State Meet. Jennilee Hoyer was 18th in the Region Meet with a time of 17:00.58, and Laura Selman placed 20th with a time of 17:07.50.
Other runners for the Flyers who competed at the Region Meet were McClay Fischer, 26th (17:54.37); and Briauna Smith, 31st (18:17.15).
Colman-Egan will have two runners competing in the State Meet. Placing 12th in the Region Meet was Jessica Wittrock with a time of 16:56.04. Callie Verver was 14th with a time of 16:56.92.
Other Colman-Egan runners competing in the meet were Katie Hannasch, 36th (19:04.43); Madison Voelker, 38th (19:06.80); and Haleigh Nicol, 39th (19:07.42).
In the boys' varsity division, the Tigers placed fourth in the team division with 57 points. Chester and Colman-Egan did not field a complete team.
Winning the team title was Elkton-Lake Benton with a low score of nine points. Following the Elks were Dell Rapids St. Mary 15, McCrossan 26, Howard 57, Canistota 59, Arlington 64, Lake Preston 65, Bridgewater-Emery 78 and Baltic 82.
Howard will have one participant in the State Meet. Jona Peters finished 19th in 19:02.14.
Other Howard runners who competed in the Region Meet were Cooper Eliason, 22nd (19:55.75); Logan Hattervig, 26th (20:56.98); and Brandon Schwader, 37th (22:16.86).
Chester had two runners qualify for the State Meet. They were Evan Baumberger, 18th with a time of 18:52.77; and Zach Brown, 20th with a time of 19:04.98.
According to Chester's coach Ross Peterson, this will be the first time Chester will have runners in the boys' State Meet, since 2010.
Colman-Egan had one runner in the Region Meet. Jared Schwebach finished 21st with a time of 19:37.79.
In the girls' junior varsity division, Howard placed second in the team standings with 12 points behind Elkton-Lake Benton's nine points. All of other teams were incomplete.
Katlyn Steeneck was fourth in the 3K race with a time of 15:03.12.
Other Howard runners who ran in the race were Gabby Helmich, 6th (15:48.43); Taryn Albert, 8th (16:39.96); Geena Kim, 12th (18:54.90); Kennedy Ruml, 13th, (20:10.22); and Maria Schwader, 14th (21:05.11).
In the boys' junior varsity race, Howard and Colman-Egan each had one runner. Carter Schwader of Howard placed 18th in 16:50.76. Colman-Egan's Garret Satterly placed 19th in 21:55.92.
