The Madison City Commission approved the first reading of an ordinance on Tuesday that will increase solid-waste pick-up charges by 75 cents per month. Consumers who use the city's garbage pick-up services will see their monthly bills increase to $13.75 per month if they use a 65-gallon garbage cart owned by the city. Customers who use a city-owned, 95-gallon garbage cart will have their monthly bills increase to $17. Residents who set out their trash using two 30-gallon containers will see their monthly bills increase to $17. City Finance Officer Jeff Heinemeyer told the city commissioners that about 60 customers still use the 30-gallon containers. If the second reading of the new ordinance is approved, customers will see the new charges in their utility bills that will arrive in December and are payable in January.
