HUMBOLDT -- A Montrose woman died and her husband suffered life-threatening injuries in a one-vehicle crash on Tuesday on Interstate 90 one-half mile west of Humboldt in Minnehaha County. Junell Jean Johnston, 44, was a passenger in a 1999 Ford Ranger traveling eastbound on I-90. David Lee Johnston, 47, was driving. He lost control and the vehicle slid off the roadway and rolled numerous times before coming to rest in the westbound lanes of I-90. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt, and both were thrown from the vehicle. Speed and slippery road conditions were contributing factors to the crash. Alcohol was not a factor. No further information was available. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, Minnehaha County Emergency Management, Humboldt Fire and Rescue, Humboldt Ambulance, Salem Ambulance, and McCook County Emergency Management assisted.
