01/16/2013 Lake County to host hazard mitigation workshop By ELISA SAND, Staff Reporter Lake County's emergency management director, announced Wednesday (today) that his department would host a workshop concerning community hazard mitigation on Feb. 14. The mitigation workshop, that will start at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the county's Public Safety Building, will provide the results of Lake County's Multi-hazard, Pre-disaster Mitigation Planning Project. The results of the 12-month project will include completed hazard profiles for Lake County and descriptions of public and private properties that could be affected by flooding, severe winter storms, tornadoes and drought. The participants can also review the proposed goals intended to reduce risk to local communities and the county. Don Thomson, county emergency management director, and a consultant to the project will host the workshop. The invitees to the workshop include the mayors and city officials from Madison, Chester, Ramona, Rutland, Nunda and Wentworth. Other invitations will go out to city and county planning and zoning commissions, county highway department, municipal public works departments, and community development officials. Members of the public are also invited to attend and participate in the mitigation planning process and make comments on the draft of the mitigation plan. After the workshop, officials will place a draft of the Lake County mitigation plan at the county courthouse for public comment and review.
