Madison's Finance Office reported on Tuesday that Dale Davis had taken out an election petition to run as a candidate in the 2013 mayoral election. Davis, the director of the Dakota State University bookstore, said Wednesday (today) that he had reviewed his plans to run for office with university officials and would start gathering signatures for his petition. Two other men have indicated an interest in running for mayor: Myron Moen and Paul Michael Weist. Weist, a DSU student, took out an election petition on Monday. He is the son of Madison School Board member Paul Weist. Moen took out an election petition from the City Finance Office last week. Moen is credited with the creation of the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame and currently serves as its executive director. The first step for any potential candidate is collecting signatures to run on the April 9 ballot. The city and Madison Central School District have agreed to hold a combined election this spring. Mayor Gene Hexom has decided not to run for another three-year term. The Madison School Board has three seats up for election this year that also have three-year terms. The candidates have until Feb. 22 to submit a completed petition to run.
